Susana Balbo Wines achieved outstanding results in the latest annual guide from Descorchados, one of South America’s most important wine authorities. Patricio Tapia awarded 11 of our wines 95+ points in his most recent tasting, with results to be published in the 2018 edition of Descorchados.
Five of our wines also received “best in class” awards, including the distinguished “Vino Revelación” for BenMarco Sin Límites 2017, presented for the first time this year, and “Best Rosé” for Susana Balbo Signature Rose 2016. Four of our wines were named the best from their region, including BenMarco Sin Límites 2017 from Pedernal, Nosotros Francis 2013 from El Peral, Nosotros Sofita 2013 from Los Chacayes, and Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 from Los Arboles.
Susana Balbo credits this year’s impressive performance to the hard work and innovative approach of her team. “Throughout our history we have always been open to experimentation, to exploring new perspectives and frontiers while keeping 100% focus on quality. Our winemaking team has been working relentlessly to develop new concepts like Susana Balbo Signature Limited Edition Paraje Altamira 2013 and BenMarco Sin Límites while fine tuning all of our varietals and blends with each passing year, and I am proud to see such positive critical recognition of these efforts”.
Each of our lines of wine scored remarkably well in the latest guide. All three wines from our highest-end Nosotros line – including Francis 2013, Single Vineyard Nómade 2014 and Sofita 2013 – received 96 points, in addition to the “Best from El Peral” and “Best from Los Chacayes” recognitions. Nosotros Francis 2013 and Nosotros Sofita 2013 were also recognized among the top-ranking red blends from Latin America.
Our Susana Balbo Signature line this year presented for the first time its Limited Edition Paraje Altamira 2013, sourced entirely from Altamira in Valle de Uco. This new wine received 97 points along with multiple awards including Ranking Best Malbec, Ranking Best Reds and Ranking Best of Altamira.
Other highlights from the Susana Balbo Signature line include the Malbec 2015, which was awarded 96 points and ranked among the best from Altamira and the best red blends (due to its 5% blend of Petit Verdot), and the White Blend 2016, which received 95 points and ranked among the best white wines, best white blends and best from Altamira. The Susana Balbo Signature Brioso 2015 and Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 also scored highly, with 94 points, in addition to the Rosé 2017 with 94 points and the Torrontés 2017 and Chardonnay 2016 with 92 points.
Our Benmarco line was also a standout this year, presenting for the first time its new Sin Límites Malbec, which reflects the open-minded and exploratory approach to terroir of viticulturist Edy Del Pópolo, who seeks to discover the most interesting soil and climate combinations to reveal different expressions of vineyards planted along the main appellations in Argentina. The Benmarco Sin Límites Malbec 2017 proved an impressive first run, receiving 97 points and multiple awards including Vino Revelación, Best from Pedernal, Ranking Best Reds and Ranking Best Malbec.
Other highlights from the Benmarco line include Expresivo 2015, earning 96 points, Ranking Best Red Blends and Ranking Best from Gualtallary, and Cabernet Sauvignon 2016, with 94 points and Ranking Best from Los Arboles. Benmarco’s Sin Limites Malbec 2016 also received 95 points and Benmarco Malbec 2016 94 points.
Finally, Susana Balbo Wines’ Crios line of young, fresh wines received recognition for its Red Blend 2016 and Torrontés 2017, both of which earned 90 points and ranked among the best value for price/quality relation.
