Susana Balbo’s wines stood out in Vinous’ latest report on Argentinian wines

Renowned wine journalist Joaquín Hidalgo has recently published his latest report on Argentina in American wine magazine Vinous, and the wines produced by Susana Balbo stood out with excellent scores.

Mendoza, November 2021.– Susana Balbo Red wines obtained more than 90 points in Vinous’ most recent Argentina report, called “Argentina on the Couch: Malbec, Terroir and Other Trends”. This proves once again the consistency and quality of the wines produced by the winery of the first female winemaker of the country. All the wines were tasted and rated by Argentinian wine journalist Joaquín Hidalgo. On this occasion, Hidalgo highlighted the characteristics of Argentinian soils and pointed out how the singularities of each terroir are reflected in the resulting wines. An example of this is Nosotros Single Vineyard Nómade Malbec 2018, which stood out with 95 points. This is a “roaming” wine, sourced from a different single vineyard every year, depending on where the winery’s team finds the best Malbec attributes each vintage.

Getting deeper into terroirs, Hidalgo emphasized that the relationship between vines and soils is hardly a new concept, but claimed it takes a distinctive tone in Argentina. Every year, wineries put a lot of effort into exploring each plot of their vineyards, and Argentinian wines specially reflect this will. Our Susana Balbo Signature Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 -which obtained 94 points, its highest score is proof of that. “Intense in the mouth, the tannins are finely grained but reactive, enhanced by the mild freshness. The flow is expansive yet channeled”, claimed Joaquín. Another proof of this is Susana Balbo Signature Malbec, which also got an outstanding score from the journalist (93 points).

Hidalgo also tasted BenMarco wines, the viticulturist’s wines of Susana Balbo’s portfolio, which are produced under the watchful eye of Edgardo Del Pópolo, one of the most renowned and experienced Argentinian viticulturists. Joaquín Hidalgo awarded BenMarco Expresivo 2019 with 94 points praising the fruity flavor and delicate texture in spite of the overall vigor of  these wines and gave 93 points to BenMarco Sin Límites Malbec Orgánico 2020.

About Vinous and Joaquín Hidalgo

Vinous is one of the most important wine-specialized media in the United States. With the addition of renowned critic Stephen Tanzer in 2014, Vinous expanded coverage to all major wine regions, including Argentina.

In 2019, Tanzer introduced the Argentinian winemaker and journalist Joaquín Hidalgo as his replacement to cover Argentina and Chile. Tanzer himself recommended Hidalgo as his replacement after following the Argentine’s career ever since they met in 2006, when they were both judges for a wine guide.
