Susana Balbo Wines continues to achieve critical recognition, with the latest accolades published by U.S. wine critic Stephen Tanzer of Vinous in his 2018 report Argentina’s Wines Enter the World Stage.
Once again our white wines stood out, earning among the highest scores of all whites in Argentina. Our Susana Balbo Signature Brioso White Blend 2017 earned 92+ points and the best ranking of all white blends in the report. Our Susana Balbo Signature Barrel Fermented Torrontés 2017 received 92 points, the highest awarded to Torrontés.
Tanzer notes of the Barrel Fermented Torrontés:
Susana Balbo's objective here is to create a high-end white wine from Argentina. This juicy, very dry wine is still a bit youthfully imploded but is already quite distinctive.
And of the Brioso White Blend:
Offers lovely texture and intensity, showing strong citrusy grapefruit and herb flavors complicated by intriguing salinity. Not a particularly fruity style but boasts excellent citric tension and finishes with terrific salty grip and excellent length. The Signature Torrontés is easier to drink while this cooler style is more powerful and cutting and needs to be served with food.
Our Crios Torrontés 2017 was also highlighted, with 90 points and a glowing review from Tanzer:
Salty, sappy and very dry, with a sexy musky quality that calls to mind both Condrieu and Chablis. … this wine should make a terrific aperitif but could also pair well with grilled fish or sushi.
Beyond the whites, our reds from the Susana Balbo Signature and Nosotros lines also fared well, receiving the following scores:
Stephen Tanzer joined the world´s top wine critics in praising the overall quality of wines coming out of Argentina today, particularly from the Uco Valley regions of Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira. According to Tanzer,
…the country’s best producers are making more refined, aromatically complex and vibrant wines than ever before – bottles that should satisfy even hard-core fans of classic European wines.
