Susana Balbo, named “Winemaking Legend” by Tim Atkin Master of Wine

In his prestigious “Special Report on Argentina 2020”, the English critic granted Susana Balbo, the first female winemaker in Argentina, the title of “Winemaking Legend of the Year”, in recognition of her career. Moreover, sixteen wines produced by Susana Balbo Wines were awarded 90+ points.

The English critic Tim Atkin, one of the 394 Masters of Wine worldwide, visits Argentina every year since 1992 and his annual report, which has been published for eight years now, has become a crucial guide, especially in the different European markets. In his “Special report on Argentina 2020”, Atkin named Susana Balbo the “Wine legend of the year”. He based his decision on what she has accomplished and continues to accomplish with her wines, and the passion she shows towards Argentina and the world of wine.

In a recent virtual meeting, the journalist invited Susana Balbo to tell her story and talk about her days at university, her living in Cafayate, her work as an international consultant, the foundation of her own winery, her presidencies in Wines of Argentina, the incorporation of her children and Edgardo del Popolo to the team and her role in politics. Atkin emphasized that, in addition to everything she has accomplished so far, the winemaker is still very active and praised how successful she has been even with the ups and downs that every entrepreneur like Susana has on their path.

They also recalled the moment when Tim Atkin encouraged –and challenged– Susana to make a blend of white varieties, which shortly after resulted in the wine Susana Balbo Signature White Blend, which today is one of the flagship wines of the winery and one of the main referents of the white wine revolution in Argentina. The 2019 vintage of this White Blend obtained 95 points in Tim Atkin’s report and made it to the podium as one of the year’s best white blends.

This remarkable score was not an isolated case. The 2019 vintage of BenMarco Sin Límites Gualtallary Malbec also scored 95 points, which put it on the podium of the best Malbecs on this 2020 report. Another white from Susana Balbo Wines stood out compared to the other wines in its category: The 2019 Susana Balbo Signature Barrel Fermented Torrontés was one of the two best Torrontés this year with 94 points. Another thirteen wines scored 90 points and above in Tim Atkin’s report this year. Susana Balbo Wines also obtained an important recognition by being included as one of the 25 first growths on the podium of Argentina’s main producers.

For the 2020 edition, Atkin tasted more than 1,700 wines from 331 producers, and concluded: “again and again this year, I tasted with a smile on my face as wine after great wine expressed its terroir with precision, grace and beauty.” Furthermore, he emphasized that, since his first visit in 1992, “the transformation has been remarkable. I can’t think of another country, even South Africa, that has changed so much in my wine writing lifetime.” These are, without a doubt, important words of recognition for all Argentine wine industry and for the wines by Susana Balbo, this year’s “winemaking legend”.
