Wine Advocate published the new report on Argentine wines prepared by Luis Gutiérrez, called “Argentina: Transition To Organic; 2020 and 2021 from an Armchair”. All Susana Balbo wines –Crios, Susana Balbo Signature, Nosotros and BenMarco– were awarded excellent scores for the most recent innovations and releases.
This time, Luis Gutiérrez tasted virtually, a necessary measure in times of pandemic. Through a video call with Susana and her team, Gutierrez taste the new vintages and new wines from the winery's portfolio.
Our iconic Malbec, Nosotros Single Vineyard Nómade Malbec 2018 stood out with 95 points. This Malbec is a “roaming” wine that chooses its best expression on a different plot each year. In the 2018 vintage, the best Malbec came from Gualtallary, Valle de Uco. Gutiérrez described it as follows: “This is superb, and while it's already approachable, it should continue growing in bottle”.
In the winemaker's signature range, a new Torrontés that has not yet been released to the markets also stood out. It's the Susana Balbo Signature Limited Edition Torrontés Naranjo 2019, an orange wine whose first vintage was awarded 94 points. “It was produced the same way it was four decades ago: fermented in clay pots and matured in fourth use oak barrels for nine months”, the critic said. This new style of Torrontés is now part of this premium white wine portfolio, which also received excellent scores: Susana Balbo Signature White Blend 2019 got 94 points and Susana Balbo Signature Barrel Fermented Torrontés 2020 got 93 points. The innovative Susana Balbo Signature Rosé 2020 obtained 92 points and Gutierrez described it as: “One of the finest rosé wines from Argentina”.
The reds in the Susana Balbo Signature were not left behind: the Argentine bordeaux blend, Susana Balbo Signature Brioso 2018, got 94 points, and Susana Balbo Signature Malbec 2018, 93 points.
Crios, the range of wines inspired by Susana's children, also stood out with amazing accolades. The highlith was Crios Red Blend 2020 with 91 points. However, the rest of the wines also did very well and obtained 90 points each: Crios Cabernet Sauvignon 2020, Crios Malbec 2020 and Crios Torrontés 2020.
The terroir-focused wines, led by Edgardo del Pópolo, were highly praised by Gutiérrez as well. The star was BenMarco Sin Límites Chardonnay Gualtallary 2019, which was awarded 94 points and about which the critic said: “[it] follows the path of the impressive debut in 2018, subtle, varietal and fresh”. The reds also stood out: BenMarco Expresivo 2018 with 93+ points, BenMarco Sin Límites Malbec Gualtallary 2019 with 93 points and BenMarco Malbec 2019 with 92 points.
